Richard Lawler
Historic Ship Oil Painting Artist

Artist Richard LawlerI was born and raised in Yonkers, NY a short distance from the Hudson River. In 1950, my parents took me for a day trip on the dayliner Alexander Hamilton, a classic vintage sidewheeler.  I was so mesmerized and  in awe of the great ship that I did not want the trip to end.  So began my love affair with the sea and vintage vessels.  I spent countless hours watching the dayliners and other classic Hudson River vessels from the vantage point of the Yonkers City Pier.

During my tour of service in Germany, I spent many hours with the classic painters of Heidelberg and Munich who painted in the style of the old masters, working from dark to light, through a series of glazes to capture the emotion and drama of the subject. I try to incorporate in each painting the techniques I learned from these classic painters. After my tour of duty ended I decided to pursue a career in art and studied several years at the Art Students League in New York City

I have always loved the sea with its ever changing moods and the grand majestic historical ships that have sailed on it.  I especially love the large beautiful yachts that vied for the Americas Cup over the years and the graceful steamers that once sailed the Hudson River.  The great war ships and sea battles of the past inspire me to capture historical moments that forever changed our lives and live in the memories of  all.

I choose each subject based on the drama and emotional impact of the vessels involved in the composition.  The play of light on the water and subject helps to bring life to these historical vessels in their most dramatic moments.  I research each subject so they can be historically accurate as I depict them.  My goal is to capture the images of these proud vessels so that their memory lives on forever.

Many of my paintings are hanging in private and corporate collections worlwide.  As I proceed in my career I hope to add many more painting to my collections.  I feel the best is yet to come.
